Something has shifted in how people find information. Perplexity passed 100 million weekly queries in October 2024, after handling 500 million in all of 2023. ChatGPT is now the 11th most visited site in the world. Google AI Overviews appear on more than half of healthcare results. For the first time in 25 years, the dominant interface for discovery is changing from a list of links to a single answer. Here is what we think follows from that.

Key ideas

  • Removing the click from 8 billion daily searches could return 32.4 million hours to people every day.
  • Platform shifts happen faster than incumbents expect. Google went from smaller than Yahoo to dominant in about two years.
  • Websites will increasingly serve machines; the human experience moves into the AI application.
  • Authentic human content becomes scarce and valuable, and a marketplace for it is likely to emerge.
  • Advertising inside AI answers will be contextual to the conversation, not the keyword.

A zero-click future saves time on a global scale

Traditional search ends with a click. AI answer engines end with an answer. On the surface that is a small change in interface; at scale it is enormous. The average Google search takes about 14.6 seconds from query to click, and Google handles roughly 8 billion searches a day. Remove that click and you free up around 32.4 million hours every single day, which is close to the entire Swedish workforce working a full shift.

Efficiency gains of that size do not just make search nicer. They change how a society allocates its time.

Faster adoption than we might expect

It is tempting to assume this transition will take a decade. History says otherwise. In the early 2000s Google was smaller than Yahoo; within about two years it was the default. That happened in a world of dial-up and desktop. Today's hyper-connected, mobile-first population adopts new behaviours far faster, and AI answers are already embedded in the products people use every day. We expect AI answer adoption to outpace every previous shift.

Websites will be for bots, not people

If people get their answer inside the AI, the website stops being the destination. Content from a retailer, a bank or a publisher gets absorbed by the model and served directly in the conversation. A shopper can compare, choose and eventually buy without ever opening a tab. In that world the website's primary reader is a crawler, and its primary job is to be understood by machines. That is a fundamental reimagining of what a website is for.

Brands will enter a game of 'telephone' with AI

Between a brand and its customer now sits a language model that decides how the brand is interpreted, summarised and presented. The marketer's job changes from designing a beautiful website to making sure the model retrieves the right facts and repeats them accurately. Brands will need specialised tools to watch how they are described across AI platforms, to spot when the message gets garbled, and to fix the source so the next answer is right.

The website used to be the message. Now the model is the messenger, and you have to make sure it heard you correctly.

User-generated content becomes the new oil

As AI-generated text floods the web, genuinely human content becomes scarce, and scarcity creates value. Communities where real people share real experiences, such as Reddit or X, become the primary sources models lean on when they want a lived perspective. Platforms that can verify a human wrote something gain strategic importance, both to the models and to the brands hoping to be talked about.

A new information marketplace emerges

If human content is the raw material of AI answers, people will eventually be paid for producing it. Sharing knowledge, firsthand reporting and original thinking can become an income stream rather than a hobby. The economics reward exactly the content that models cannot generate themselves.

Generative ads will be game-changing

Advertising inside answer engines will not look like a banner or a sponsored link. It will be generated for the conversation, informed by what the user has already asked, and presented as a useful complementary idea alongside the answer. Done well, it is an evolution beyond keyword advertising: the ad knows the context, not just the query.

All of this is why we started Flowgen. The shift to AI answer engines is the biggest platform change marketers have faced in a generation, and the brands that are measured, understood and present inside those answers will win it.
